Tell Us About You & Freshmen Friday

TGIF, Everyone, and thank you for stopping by for Freshmen Friday!  If this is your first Freshmen Friday Party, let me share the drill. First, we talk about one concept for improving our sites and/or business…. then, we party!  It is as easy as that!

If you are visiting Home Savvy for the first time, you may be interested in viewing these previous Freshmen Friday posts with tips for bloggers:

Today’s topic for building our sites is to talk about ourselves!  Ha.  If it were only that easy, right?  What I mean is, when we visit your site for the first time, I recommend making it easy for us to relate to you.  Everything I read about successful blogging focuses on two key points:

1.  Content.  Find a writing style or “voice,” stick with it, and be consistent with your posting frequency when at all possible.
2.  Be relatable.

Let’s focus on #2 today.  Does your site have an “About” section?  If it doesn’t, I strongly recommend adding one.  Whether it is a page option in your menu or a paragraph in a margin, make it easy for new visitors to find out a little bit about you.  The “About” section is always the first place I visit on a new site.  This section should tell us a little about who you are, what your site offers, and should even give us a little sample of your voice.  The more I know about you, your family, or your site, the easier it is for me to find things we may have in common… things that may keep me coming back to visit and find out more!  Plus, it is a whole lot easier to feel comfortable commenting and building a report with someone you know by name rather than a blank administrator of a site, right?

To give you an example of how relationships form in this bloggy world (or the internet in general), I was so touched and surprised by the number of people who e-mailed me this week to wish me a “get well.”  I just happened to whine about my flu bug on a post and received a great reminder (and inspiration for this post)… People Care!  Well, most of us anyway.  Ha ha.  When I visit a site and read a post about one of my bloggy friends having a bad day, I write to wish them well, and then I specifically go back to their sites to check and see how they are doing later on!  What can I say, I have feelings, and so do others!  Who’da thunk it?

Well, I have digressed, but my point is simple:  Give us something to relate to.  Let us get to know you a little bit so we care even more about what you have to say and the information you are sharing.  Tell us why you are passionate about what you write about and we are more likely to believe or have interest in what you have to say.

I understand you may want to keep some privacy.  I am not telling you to share anything too personal here (unless you really want to of course).  If you don’t want to share your name, come up with a nickname or tag… something we can “call” you.  When I started my blog, I thought it was a bad idea to give my last name, so I called myself “Savvy Erin.”  It isn’t an ego thing (I assure you).  I just thought it was a name that would remind people what site I was visiting from, one that at least gave me a name, and one that would keep my privacy.  However, I am in real estate now.  My name isn’t private anymore.  “Hi, My name is Erin Cestero.  It is nice to meet you!”
That’s me.
I am a very lucky wife of a wonderful Navy hubby!
I looooooove food… If I haven’t mentioned it before, funnel cakes, in specific, are my all time favorite food group! Yes, I consider funnel cakes a food group because you can top them with almost anything and they are still delicious!
I also love travel …
And crazy adventures… (I am not very good at sitting still!)
Most importantly, I love “HOME” and everything it represents to me… family, friends, safety, and love.  That is why I decided to start this site.
That is my informal about, if you are looking for a place to get started with ideas, you can see my “About” page here.

For another great example, one of my favorite bloggers, Krista of Everyday Mom’s Meals, has a great about section in her page margin.  You cannot miss it when you visit her site here.

Those are a few examples.  Do you have an “About?”  If you do and would like to share, I would love to read them all!  Post a link in my comments on this post so we can all get to know you a little better.

Now, let’s party!  The rules are the same every Friday:
  1. The link party portion of Freshmen Friday is for new bloggers who have either been blogging for less than a year  OR have fewer than 150 followers.  If you fit one or both of those criteria, this is your opportunity to shamelessly promote yourself by posting a link to a post, directly to your blog using your button, to giveaways, to parties… whatever (appropriate) link your heart desires!
  2. I would love for you to become a Google Friends Connect follower of my site using the “Join This Site” button in the right column of this screen.  If it isn’t there, hit refresh and it should appear.
  3. I would love if you would “like” my Facebook page by clicking here.
  4. I would really appreciate you linking back to this party and/or telling your friends about it!  The more the merrier right?!?
  5. Visit your fellow partiers, share the comment love, and become followers of sites you enjoy!
Now link up!
